Country: India
By: Avard
Year: 2008
Total project costs: EUR.15.000
StartFund Share: EUR. 7.500
In the Kadapa and Chittoor district in southern India, a lack of clean water still poses a life threatening challenge. This project concerned the drilling of water
wells to provide clean drinking water linked to the facilitation of a health program through organising Awareness Camps on hygiene and sanitation in relation to the prevention of contagious diseases (cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea, dysentery, malaria etc.).
The project was carried out by Avard (Alliance of 11 Voluntary Associations for Rural Development). Each of the associations also financially contributed to supporting the 22 remote villages covered by the project. Heavy rains initially obstructed the original schedule, but researchers still managed to conduct a geological survey to identify suitable water points The platforms were constructed, the bore wells were drilled and the hand pumps were installed in each of the 22 villages. Combined with the Awareness Camps and Avard village health workers frequently conducting home visits in all of the 22 villages, the project proved to be very successful.
Outcome
- access to safe drinking water all through the year for approximately 10.000 families
- notable improvement of hygiene
- reduction of water born diseases and child mortality
